When a civil rights crisis erupted in Birmingham, Alabama, in the spring of 1963, Kennedy considered shifting ground and pressing for congressional action. Chief Curry: The news media, a number of them, had continued to say: Let us see him. And we thoughtwell, I didboy, hes got a good sense of humor, you knowto react like that. But Captain Fritz and his men spread them out, and I walked on through holding the gun over my head so nobody would touch it.
